Throughout the years, Samsung has been a major player in the technology market and it doesn’t look like they’re going to slow down any time soon. Since their flash memory solutions are still considered the best in the world, we decided to take a closer look at all the SSD options they’re offering, so we can find out exactly what gives them that #1 spot.
Starting off with internal SSDs; These SSDs are the main ones you’ll be using when building or upgrading modern desktops or laptops. The name pretty much gives away how they’re being used; Internally in your computer.
This SSD features a 2.5 Inch SATA interface, which means they still use the older SATA connection just like the common hard drives you see these days. The main difference between this and a hard drive is that these SSDs use flash memory, instead of electro-mechanical parts.
They are mainly used for budget computers and older laptops that support these types of drives. They’re cost effective, silent, safe and most importantly; Five times as fast as a common hard drive. Looking to upgrade your old, slow computer so it doesn’t take 5 minutes to boot anymore? This is definitely the best option for you!
This SSD is pretty much the same as the previous one we covered, it just uses the smaller M.2 interface. Instead of plugging it into your SATA connector, this one goes straight into your motherboard’s M.2 connector that supports the SATA interface. The speed remains the same, the only big difference is the form factor and that it uses slightly less power.
These SSDs are mainly used for cheap, compact builds that have the M.2 slot with SATA compatibility on their motherboard. Just as the previous one; It’s about five times as fast as the common hard drive.
Now we’re getting into the good stuff! These SSDs also use the smaller M.2 slot on your motherboard, but instead of using the SATA interface, they use something called NVMe. This is a blazing fast storage solution that uses the same basic interface as for example your graphics card. They’re about the same size as other M.2 SSDs, use flash memory as well, but are powered by PCI Express 3.0 technology.
These SSDs are used in most new desktops and laptops, and offer speeds of up to 3100 MB/s, which is in turn about 5 times faster than a SATA SSD. If you’re looking for an SSD that gives you the best bang-for-your-buck, then this is the way to go. Pro tip: Installing your games on a M.2 NVMe SSD will give you a noticeable boost in performance. You should try it out!
The best of the best. Powered by PCI Express 4.0, these SSDs offer speeds of up to 6400 MB/s, which once again doubles the speed of the previous SSDs we covered. Wondering how it stacks up against the SATA SSD we covered at the start of this article? Well… It’s about 12 times faster than those. Pretty cool, right?
While the difference is barely noticeable when playing games, it’s definitely present when browsing your folders on your computer. It gives that extra snappy feel to everything! Keep in mind that you need a motherboard with PCI express 4.0 support if you want to enjoy these speeds to the fullest.
This SSD is also compatible with the playstation 5, so if you’re looking for a new, blazing fast SSD for your console, this is the way to go!
Next up are the external SSDs. These are smaller, more firm and protected drives that offer slower speeds, but in turn make it so you can take these everywhere you go. Just plug them into your USB port, open the drive and start working! These are also flash memory based without any electro-mechanical parts, which means they’re very sturdy and can even survive drops from heights as high as two meters!
This is a small, portable device that easily fits in your pocket. While it’s not as fast as your internal M.2 SSD, it’s still a great solution if you’re looking for expandable storage that you can take with you on the go! These drives are also compatible with most operating systems such as Windows, Mac, Android and gaming consoles.
The T7 touch is exactly the same as the normal T7, just more secure! The touch version stands out with its biometric scanner that allows you to use your fingerprint to unlock the SSD. Paired with Samsung’s pre-installed security software, there’s no safer solution when you want to keep your files safe while traveling around the world.
